OUR FOCUS

Wildlife Plays a Vital Role

The Tribe honors the connection between all aspects of the natural world. Future generations depend on the preservation of complex ecosystems and protecting resources in a holistic manner. Before the arrival of European settlers, the Kootenai Tribe thrived by respectfully coexisting with the natural world.

Honoring Our Covenant

The Tribe works closely with sister tribes and First Nations and with the state, provincial and federal governments to create management practices that prioritize the well-being of Ktunaxa Territory’s precious natural resources.

The Kootenai Tribal Council heeds the words of its elders, who say the forests in the Territory do not look the way they are supposed to look based on Ktunaxa oral histories, nor do they support the Territory and the Ktunaxa people in the manner they should. The Covenant must be honored to make the forests healthy once again.
